Rolf’s Ramblings….
WOW – I got THREE cricket jokes sent to me this last fortnight so rather than try and tickle you with mine, here are some from club members…….. if you can guess who they are from I’ll make sure you get a free sausage on Presentation Night……. and I might even buy you a drink……….!!!
Not Out
A spin bowler sent down one of his most innocuous deliveries and, when the ball plopped into the batsman’s pads, he spun around to the umpire and begged the age old question:
“Howzat”
“Not out” the umpire replied
“But it didn’t deviate and went straight into his pads”
“True”
“He didn’t hit the ball before it hit his pads?”
“No”
“Well, why didn’t you give it out?”
“Because the ball was not going fast enough to disturb the bails”.
LBW = Large Bum and Waist
One day there was a batsman that was so obese that both the bowler and umpire couldn't see the stumps when he took guard.
"What will I do?” asked the bowler
"Just bowl", advised the umpire.
"If it hits his legs I'll give him out LBW and if it hits bum I'll signal a wide!"
De-Railed
A cricketer had a terrible day in the field, dropping no less than 4 chances. After showering at the end of the day’s play, he told his friend that he had better rush to catch his train. One of mates drawled: “I hope you have better luck than you did with the ball.”
THE BIG ‘n’ LITTLE
BROTHER COMPETITION
Well, the competition is hotting up as the season draws to a close……
If you remember in the last newsletter I had compiled the Big & Little Brother & Sister results up to the end of Junior’s Round 6 – just before Christmas. There were no points included yet for 2010 so there may be some upsets to the rankings as the results have been compiled to the end of Round 8 – ie up to and including 20th Feb. So – the Junior points added are from 2 additional rounds but the Senior points are from 5 additional rounds because the Seniors start earlier in January. Keep your eyes on the notice board in the clubroom as I will put up the latest points tally early next week and will get Bill to email the results to you midweek.
Keep chasing those points – there is only 1 round to go before we work out who the winners are……
U10 Non-Comp – MATCH REPORTS
Round 9 – Red Team vs Mooroolbark 11.12.09
BLUE SKIES, some Cumulus clouds (white cotton balls), slight breeze with the Dandenongs as the backdrop.
Ryan Van Ne Kirk was our captain today. We had only 8 players, but you would not have known. Ryan opened the bowling and set the mood for the game. He started with a maiden over, one of many that the boy's bowled. The bowling was tight, very tight, in fact Mooroolbark had limited opportunities to make runs. We really had only six fieldsmen if you don't include the bowler and the wicket keeper. The boy's did a lot of running, they deserve a medal. The fielding was so tight, nothing went past them.
Ryan 0/2, Josh C. 24 (2 4's), Harrison 4, Matt 24 (2 4's), Tyson 17 (3 3's and very quick too), Joel 20 (2 4's), Sam 8,and Nathan Paisley 15 (1 boundary). They just couldn't be stopped. A delight to watch. A special mention to Nathan Paisely who batted like an absolute champion. He was so confident, hitting every ball, sweetly too, with such balance and actually with some intensity as well. It was magic to watch, especially the boundary (his first) and the smile that was bigger than Luna Park when he came off. Congratulations Nathan. Thanks Bill for yet another superbly coached game. Your special tips are really helping the boy's, both in terms of skill development and game-play.
Round 10 – Red Team vs Montrose Wolves 18.12.09
MILD - a fluctuating breeze. Hmmmm, Christmas is just around the corner.
Sam was our captain tonight and started the game in spectacular fashion. In his first over, he bowled very fast and he almost took a caught and bowled, oooh, so close. Sean almost took a catch and there was a run out by Ryan. A top beginning to the match. Edge of your seat stuff, again. Joel performed some fabulous work in the field, great backing up, accurate throws to the wickets - great to watch. The bowling was as follows: Sam 0/7, Ryan 0/9, Tyson 1/5 (very quick again), Harrison 0/4, Joel 1/4, Nathan 0/0 (maiden), Jack 1/6 (maiden), Sean 0/7, Nick 0/4, Matt 1/9, Josh 0/0 (maiden). The batting was a similar story, with many boys defending their wickets well and not going out. Sam 7 n.o., Sean 7, Nick 7, n.o., Jack 4, n.o., Joel 11, Matt 17, Tyson 7, n.o., Ryan 2, Harrison 1, Josh Povey, 3, Nathan 3. Congratulations boys on yet another wonderful game of cricket. Be proud of your efforts so far, enjoy your Christmas, throw the arm over a few times if you can, hit a few balls in the park and come back in 2010 - ready to PLAY!!!!!!!
Round 12 – Red Team vs Lilydale 12.02.10
OVERCAST, BREEZY! Not a bad night for cricket.
After what seemed like an eternity, the cricket season finally resumed. (Unfortunately last week, Warrandyte's oval was apparently under water, so we all had an opportunity to watch or in fact go to the MCG to watch the 20/20 game). Back to the Lilydale game - Nick Sharkey was our captain tonight and we bowled first. Nick's opening spell was great, a few dot balls and a missed catch by Harrison - a good start however. Once again our fielding was very tight, the boys are really working as a team now. All aspects including, wicket keeping, long throws from the outfield, run-outs by Jack, Joel, Josh and a catch by Matt and fabulous backing up by many of the boys, especially Jack who had some great throws to the stumps, very tight. Everyone bowled well and there were many wickets taken, 12 in total. The bowling was ACE. Nick 0/14 off 3 overs, Josh Povey 0/9 off 3 overs, Tyson 0/4, Nathan 0/16 - with 4 runouts in one over, a team hatrick in fact, second one for the season, Matt 1/3 (maiden), Josh Cunningham 0/5, Harrison 2/4 (maiden), Jack Lee 4/4 ( 3 of which were in the same over, 2 bowled and 1 caught and bowled - truly superb), Joel 2/2 (both bowled), Ryan 0/4 (maiden) and Sam 1/4. Absolutely amazing stuff, certainly keeping up with or even better than any performance we have seen on our TV screens over the summer.
Our fielding was so great that I think initially the boys were caught napping in the batting stakes, we had a few wickets fall early. Lilydale had a dream run of bowling. It wasn't long before we had a game on our hands however. The boy's were very keen to improve the situation and they did so in fine fashion. Nick 0, Tyson 8, Matt 8, Harrison 5, Josh Cunningham 14 (3 4's, a delight to watch, so smooth, so effortless - Warner's prodigy), Sam 15 ( top score for the night, including a boundary and a 3 and a 2), Nathan 2, Ryan 1, Joel 12 (a lovely knock including a boundary), Josh Povey 4 and Jack 6. Lilydale had a number of very quick bowlers which were electric, but our boys faced every ball with courage and did extremely well. Congratulations on yet another match that was a pleasure to watch. The FUN factor was 10/10. Thanks Bill for another session of very wise words.
Round Robin at Silcock Reserve 19.02.10
WEATHER REPORT - Very warm, 32oC in fact, but very pleasant in the shade if you could find some.
A great night was had by all. We (Red Team) played 3 matches (wished we'd played at least another 3) all of which were played in the true spirit of the game. We played a restricted number of overs, rotated the field/batting pairs, had some retirements ( made 10 runs ) and had some wonderful displays of bowling, catching, runouts and wicket keeping. The team played with great enthusiasm and support for each other and all players were involved in the action. The spectators were involved in the action too, packing up camp 3 times in order to get the best views of the games. Chairs, rugs, drinks, food, hats, bags, children, dogs, cats, birds, wasps and even ants moved that night. Overall the boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience to play a variety of teams, in what was a really fun and happy atmosphere. Thankyou Ian for organising the boys so well, especially with so many changes/movements - you did it with ease, yet again. The boys are lucky to have you providing them with such wisdom and expertise.
Green Team Reports
Are missing………. “The dog ate my homework….!!!”
Need a volunteer for the last 2 matches of the season please……. Talk to me (Rolf) on Friday night if you are interested.
Junior Comp ROUND 8 – MATCH REPORTS
U12/2’s v South Croydon at Silcock Reserve Ranges 9/155 defeated South Croydon 9/125
Day 1 – We fielded first and put in a solid performance to keep them under 3 runs an over. At the break they were 5/70 off 25 overs and ended up 9/125 off their 45 overs. Sean Doyle had a brilliant day with the ball with 4/7 off 4 overs – this included a 3 wicket maiden (3 wickets in 4 balls – just missed the Hat-trick!) and a caught & bowled.
Well done Sean! More good bowling came from Daniel Grillo (2/15 off 5), Jake Sali (1/2 off 3) and Jarrod Frogley (1/11 off 3). Ben Robinson took a catch as did Daniel Grillo who took a one handed blinder at square leg!
Day 2 – The runs were slow to come in the first session and we lost some early wickets to be 6/57 off 25 overs at the break. The next 10 overs saw the run rate increase to be 8/100 off 35 and increase further in the last 10 to be 9/155 in the end. Jake Sali (36 not out) had another good innings as did Sean Doyle (31 not out). Other good batting performances came from Matthew Wakeley (14), Daniel Grillo (8), Ben Robinson (7) and Jacob Nelson (6). A few of our wickets were out caught and we had a bit of luck with dropped catches, so we need to work on keeping the ball along the ground to avoid giving away easy wickets.
Another good win team! It has been good to see you all encourage each other and ‘walking in with the bowler’ when fielding – keep it up! It was also good to see less of Eddie Extras who was kept to the low thirties this match. Remember that for every no-ball or wide, not only does the other team get an extra run, they get an additional ball to score off.
U14/4s v Kilsyth Kilsyth 6/247 defeated Ranges 10/104
Sorry – no report received
U14/1s v Croydon North Ranges 10/90 &4/137 defeated Croydon North 10/70
Last newsletter I said – “I can smell a win just around the corner – keep supporting each other…!”
I reckon “all out for 90” on Day 1 did not feel so good……. but it’s a funny ol’ game cricket. The team-work on day 2 was great and you all reaped the reward. Personally, I’d like to take the credit because without my scoring on the first day you struggled but on my return to scoring on day 2 you pulled off a great win. Well done – and yes – I’ll score this weekend again so NO EXCUSES…..!!!!
DAY 1 – We went in to bat and although I wasn’t there, here’s what happened……. . Our usually reliable opener –
Mark – was caught very early after only 1 run. A short partnership between Michael Hendly and Evan Woods
lifted the score to 23 before Michael was also caught for 15. Evan batted on and after short partnerships
with Liam Jeffs, Danyon Glenk (4) and Tim Minett (8) he was also caught on 30 with the score at 6/69. Then – a batting collapse followed with 3 wickets lost for only 2 runs and suddenly, we were 9/71. The 2 tail-enders made a last wicket stand with a partnership of 19 runs before Ben Jones was bowled for 8 with Harry Mason-Jones not out on 13.
Croydon North batted out the remaining overs for the day and the opening partnership of 29 runs gave Croydon North the confidence that the “game was in the bag”. A couple of runs later, the 50 overs had been bowled.
DAY2 – We started the day with a spinner – Michael Hendly – and a quick – Darcy Carrigan – and this paid off early. The 2nd opener was dismissed by a great catch by Evan behind the stumps with the score on 2/35 and third wicket fell with a catch by Eliott Hole off one of Darcy’s bullets. The fourth partnership lasted another 12 runs and then Tim Minett took a great catch off Ben Jones’ bowling and they were 4/47. Then a fantastic spell of bowling by Ben and Austin McInerney saw 3 dismissals in as many overs without another run scored. First, a low fast ball hit straight into Danyon Glenk’s chest at long off off Ben’s bowling, then Evan snaring another keeper’s catch off Austin’s bowling followed by the stumps being splayed apart by Austin and the match was turned on it’s head. They were now 7/47 and the first whiff of a win was on the wind (!! - like that….???). Austin kept up the pressure and splayed the stumps again after another 10 runs – 8/57. Eliott Hole and Liam Jeffs returned to bowl to finish them off which they did successfully. Eliott caught and bowled the 9th wicket after another 5 runs and Liam “closed the lid” after another 8 runs with a successful catch by Michael Hendly to secure the win in the 14th over of the morning. An exciting win pulled out of the “jaws of defeat”. We batted out the remaining 36 overs for practice, with the highlights being a 59 run partnership between Mark Page and Evan Woods, Mark retiring on 51, Evan not out on 42 and Ben not out on 7 at the end of the day.
We play Croydon who are on the bottom of the ladder this week – keep the momentum up and you will finish the season on another win. Great work Ranges…!!
U16/4s v Scoresby/Ferndale Ranges 4/198 defeated RIN/WDT 10/195
We travelled to Scorseby (main ground )to play Scorseby Ferndale. We lost the toss and fielded. Daynah and Chris opened the bowling and Daynah was on a roll with 2 for 2. Their batting was definitely not their strong point. One batsman made a stand and it was the “house of cards” after he departed.
First innings bowling figures are as follows:-
Overs Wickets Runs
Daynah Hopkins 5 3 5
Chris Jolley 5 3 9
Angus Legg 5 1 8
Jake Regester-Hill 5 0 5 Scorseby Ferndale were all out for 31.
So in we went to bat. Jake Regester-Hill 23 showed great fitness in running a four, Angus Legg a rather quick 19, Daniel Fusco very cavalier 9 as night watchman. We finished the day 3 for 88.
Week two and the plan was to achieve 100 runs or ten overs and then declare. Well we declared on 7 for 125 about 15 overs into the day. The chat we had going out to field for this session was to bowl line and length; nothing short and lets be competitive, cool and calm. Daynahs first spell was physical. The ball was hitting the pitch and some of their players hard ( and they were NOT happy). Chris' first ball of the day took out leg stump; the next batsmen missed the next one and then next ball, two out three stumps scattered – GAME ON. The boys were really vocal in the field with lots of encouragement to all. The wickets were shared amongst five bowlers as shown below : -
Overs Wickets Runs
Daynah Hopkins 5 1 9
Chris Jolley 5 2 2
Mitch Barr 3 1 13
Michael Prosenak 1 2 2
Liam James 4 3 10
Scorseby Ferndale were all out for 38 runs. An outright victory was achieved. Well done boys.
If they win the next game they are in the four and finals. Keep it up guys.
U16/1s v North Ringwood Ranges 8/164 defeated Montrose 10/116
In the last newsletter, Paul wrote “The boys played their best game for a long time so we hope they have turned the corner and a win is on the cards with a bit of luck.” Read on……..
We lost the toss and persuaded the Montrose captain to bat in overcast conditions perfect for bowling.
Our bowlers didn’t let us down taking wickets at will. The fielding was of a good standard and helped keep the pressure on the batsmen. KB took a five wicket haul and was well supported by all of our guys who took the ball. We bowled Montrose out for 116.
The Batsmen started off well before Balls was out for 11, the next to go was Matt for about the same. Schnitzel unfortunately didn’t trouble the scorers and Rhino was out for 6. Chucky was the mainstay of the innings making a well compiled 60. Oscar chimed in at the end with 36 to get us to a respectable total of 182.
A well earned win for the boys who have battled hard this season.
One more to go against second placed Croydon.
